In his video Dave White discusses the concept of being a visitor or resident in regards to internet usage. There is no question that the way people use social media has drastically change in the last couple of years. Social media sites like facebook, twitter and instagram are some of the most popular sites and not a single day goes by that I do not hear someone say or comment on what they saw on these sites. Dr. White mentions “Digital Identity” and how people can utilize the internet as a visitor or resident. Visitors are those who use internet to retrieve information, communicate and maybe listen to Pandora every once in a while. On the other hand residents are those who “Live” online and are visible on social media sites, upload videos, post blogs, leave comments on product they like or dislike and rate their restaurants. Residents see the internet as a park for social space. They continue to use social media as a way to feed the machine and to expand relationships.
I am definitely a visitor trying to become a resident. Until I started preparing for the single subject credential program I had no social media profiles and had never posted anything online. The amount of apps in my phone are just a few and I still use my hotmail email as my only personal email. I still have not used Uber or airbnb, not because I refuse to do so but because I still have not had the need. I use the internet as a tool box using it when I need to and putting it back when I am done. If someone would research my name online you would not find any images or social media profiles. The only thing you would find would be my name at my old job company’s website listed as a staff member and my job title. No images of me would pop up, trust me, I have tried it numerous times. My desire was always to stay private, on the other hand, after returning to school and learning more about it, I can’t believe the amount of resources that are available for teachers and students. I am excited that I will be learning all of these new tools and how beneficial they can be for students. Dave White explains how one can be a resident in your professional life and a visitor in your private life, this really impresses me because until this point I had never thought it was possible.
